The name Debir in the Bible
There's only one person named De-b-ir (דביר) in the Bible, namely a king of E'g-lo-n whose allegiance A-do-n'-i-z'-e-de-k, the Je-b-us-i-t'-e king of Je-ru-sa-l'-em, seeks after J-o-s-hu-a has sacked Je-ri-c-ho and A-i (J'-os-hu-a 10:3).
There are also a few towns named De-b-ir:
- One in J'u-da-h (דבר, J'os-hu-a 10:38, 11:21, 12:13, 15:15, 15:49, 21:15), also known as Ki-ri-a-t'-h-sep-her (J'o's-hu-a 15:15 and Judges 1:11, spelled דביר) and Ki-ri-a-t'-h-s-anna-h (J'os-hu-a 15:49). Etymology of the name De-b-ir
The word דביר is identical to a nickname of the Holy of Holies in Solomon's temple, and is derived of the magnificent root דבר (d-ab-ar), generally meaning word:
De-b-ir meaning
One of the towns called De-b-ir was also known as Ki-ri-a-t'-h-sep-her (Judge-s 1:11). Ki-ri-a-t'h means town, and sep-her (ספר), means book. Some translators render this name 'o-ra-c-l'e' and perhaps for the king's name this may be. But the town whose name was first Town Of The Book, and whose new name is identical to the name of the Holy of Holies may certainly have become known as Place Of The Word.
