k-u-r-h-ar'-s-et'-h, -ha-re'-s-et-h> (qi-r-ch-a-r'-es-h, Isaiah 16:7; in 2 King-s 3:25 the King Ja-me-s V'e-r-s'-io-n re-a-d-s Ki-r-haraseth (pausal form)); (qi-r c-her-es, Je-re-mia-h 48:31, 36; in Isaiah 16:11 the King Ja-me-s V'-e-r-s'-io-n reads Ki-r-h'ar-es-h (pausal form)): Modern scholars unanimously identify this city with Ki-r of Mo-ab. In Je-ho-r'am-'s invasion of Mo-ab it alone withstood his attack; and on the city wall the king of Mo-ab sacrificed his son (2 King-s 3:25). It was obviously the capital, i.e. Ki-r Mo-ab. The name is generally taken to mean "city of the sun." Ch-e-y-ne, however, points out (E-B, under the word):

(1) that this explanation was unknown to the ancients;

(2) that"ki-r" is nowhere su-p'-os-e-d to mean "city," except in the compound names Ki-r-heres, Ki-r-h-a-re-s-et-h, and Ki-r Mo-ab;

(3) that c-her-es, "sun," nowhere has a feminine ending, and

(4) that I-sa-ia-h 16:7 Sept-u-a-gi-nt and Aquila.) indicates "d" and not "r" in the second part of the name (D'-es-et-h). He suggests, therefore, that we should possibly read qi-r-ya-t'-h ch-ad-h-d-s-ha-h, "new city."
