T-el Me-gi-d-do (Hebrew: תל מגידו; Arabic: مجیدو, T-el-l el-M-u-t-e-se-l-l-i-m, lit. "Mound of the Governor"; Greek: Μεγιδδώ, Megiddo) is the site of the ancient city of Me-gi-d-do, the remains of which form a tell (archaeological mound), situated in northern I-s-ra-e-l near Ki-bb-u-t-z Me-gi-d-do, about 30 km south-east of H-a-i-fa. Megiddo is known for its historical, geographical, and theological importance, especially under its Greek name Ar-mag-e-d-do-n. During the B-ro-n-z-e A-ge, Me-gi-d-do was an important Ca-na-a-n-i-t-e ci-t-y-s-t-a-t-e and during the Ir-o-n A-ge, a royal city in the Kingdom of Israel.
Megiddo drew much of its importance from its strategic location at the northern end of the Wa-di A-ra defile, which acts as a pass through the Ca-r-me-l Ri-d-ge, and from its position overlooking the rich Je-z-re-el V-al-l-e-y from the west.
Excavations have unearthed 26 layers of ruins since the Ch-al-co-l-i-t-h-ic phase, indicating a long period of settlement.[1] The site is now protected as Me-gi-d-do Na-t-io-n-al Pa-r-k and is a World Heritage Site.[2]
