      Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes off northern Japan, shaking buildings even in Tokyo

      A strong earthquake struck Saturday off northern Japan, shaking buildings even in Tokyo and triggering a tsunami advisory for a part of the northern coast. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

      The U.S. Geological Survey put the strength at magnitude 7.0 and depth at 54 kilometers (33.5 miles). The shaking started just before 6:10 p.m.

      The quake was centered off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, in the country's rugged northeast, which was heavily damaged during the huge earthquake and tsunami of 2011 that left more than 18,000 people dead.



      The Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities have been detected at nuclear power plants in the region, including the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which suffered meltdowns in the 2011 quake and tsunami.

      Akira Wakimoto, a crisis management official in Tome town in Miyagi prefecture, said he was in his apartment when the quake struck, and felt his room shake for a long time.

      In a coastal city of Ofunato, Shotaro Suzuki, a hotel employee, said there was a temporary blackout and elevators stopped briefly, but power has been restored and there were no other problems.

      "Our guests seemed worried at first, but they have all returned to their rooms, and our facility seems fine,(asterisk) Suzuki told NHK.

      A magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Thursday 29 July 2021 at 4:17 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
      Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Iwaki (pop. 357,300) located 75 km from the epicenter, Kitaibaraki (pop. 50,800) 76 km away, Takahagi (pop. 33,600) 79 km away, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 86 km away, Funaishikawa (pop. 35,300) 96 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,800) 101 km away, and Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 102 km away.
