'Faulty indicator' could be behind emergency landing at RDU, American Air rep says
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - An American Airlines MD-80 has landed after it circled RDU Airport for more than two hours Thursday morning.
After American flight 2472 took off from RDU around 9:30 a.m., the aircraft was thought have an issue with its landing gear. American Airlines later confirmed the issue was that the nose gear wouldn't retract.
The plane circled near the airport for more than two hours before successfully landing just before noon.
Airport Authority Fire-Rescue Department was waiting for the aircraft's arrival. Airport officials said the plane taxied to a concourse on its own.
The flight was headed to Dallas but it never left the RDU area after taking off. A total of 141 and five crew members were on board the flight.
Twitter user Kelly Weiss told CBS 17's Holden Kurwicki "It was scary! So happy we are all safe!!"
A representative of American Airlines told CBS 17 the incident could be blamed on a faulty indicator but maintenance crews are still investigating.
