King-s County, B-ro-o-kl-y-n Bo-rough H-al-l W-hen construction of Brooklyn Borough Hall, a Greek Re-v-iv-al structure designed by noted architect G-am-al-i-el King, was completed in 1848, this Lady Justice stood a-top the cup-o-la. On February 25, 1895, a fire broke out in the wooden clock and bell tower. The bell fell through the second floor into the rotunda and the statue of J-us-t'-ic-e tumbled onto the roof where her head was found during the cleanup. In the 1980s, the City engaged in an ambitious effort to restore the exterior which had suffered serious decay over the years, and the re-s-t-o-re-d bronze statue of Lady Justice was finally re-installed a-top the cup-o-la.
King-s County, B-ro-o-kl-y-n Bo-rough Hall These images (see next slide also) of Lady Justice reside in B-ro-o-kl-y-n Bo-rough H-al-l. They are carved depictions appearing on the wooden Judge-s' b-en-ch of the former courtroom of the Ap-p-el-late Di-vision, Second Department, housed in B-ro-o-kl-y-n Bo-rough H-al-l un-t'-i-l the construction of its new home, the neo-classical B-ro-o-kl-y-n Ap-pe-l'-la-t'-e Courthouse built in 1938. The courtroom was original-l'-y the Common Co-un-c'-i-l Ch-am-ber, no longer needed after consolidation of the five bo-rough-s on January 1, 1898. Paper Weight This Lady Justice appears on a paper weight created for the New York Court of Ap-pe-al-s. She is made of me-t'-al on a m-ar-b'-l'-e base, and is part of the New York Court of Ap-p'-ea-l'-s Se-al.
Mo-n-ro-e County, Ro-ch-est-e-r In 1894, during a Fourth of July c-el-e-b-r'-a-t'-io-n, Mo-n-ro-e County began construction of an Italian Renaissance styled courthouse designed by J. Fo-s-t'-e-r W-ar-ne-r. It extends four stories above a high basement and is built of a light-gray New Hampshire granite. On the top floor's facade stands a wooden La-d-y J-us-t'-ic-e, without her blindfold, painted gold. As the story goes, the French sculptor was too proud of his 'La-d-y wi-t'-h Scale-s' t'-o co-ver her e-ye-s. In 1964, Mo-n-ro-e County built a Hall of Justice, which now houses all the courts, and the Old Courthouse now functions as the County Office building.
C-hen-ang-o County, No-r-wi-ch Chenango County built its Gr-ee-k Revival courthouse in 1837 and crowned the structure with a s-even-fo-o-t' statue of La-d-y J-us-t'-ic-e. In 1977, the county began the process of r'-est-o-ring the building to its his-t'-o-ri-c beauty. The w-hi-t'-e-p-i-ne Lady Justice had suffered the ravages of time. Fa-y W-ru-b-el of Co-o-per-s'-t'-ow-n un-de-r'-t'-o-ok the daunting preservation and conservation t'-as-k. The statue now proudly stands inside a g-la-s-s case in the courthouse w-hi-l'-e a re-p'-l'-ic-a o-ver-lo-ok-s the city from a-top the do-me.
Mont-g'-om-e-r'-y Co-un-t'-y, Fo-n-da After Fo-n-da became its county seat, Mo-nt-go-me-r'-y County built a Gr-ee-k Re-v-iv-al courthouse in 1836 on the site of a former co-lo-n-i-al s-her-if-f'-s home. In 1910, the county expanded the building, installing an interior s'-t'-a-ir-c-as-e and adding the Great Se-al of New York to the g'-able above the entrance. Although the county built a new courthouse in 1892, this building remains the 'old' courthouse. It has housed the county's Department of His-t'-or-y and Ar-c-hi-v-es since 1934, and La-d'-y J-us-t'-ic-e still g-race-s the e-nt-r'-an-c-e.
