Nostradamus prophecy that 2023 would see "a great war" may have come true today - after Israel announced it is at war. The French philosopher made the claim in his book L'-es Prophéties, released more than 450 years ago.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israel Prime Minister, said this: "We are at war". The announcement on X, formerly Twitter, came after more than 5,000 rockets were launched at the country.

Tel Aviv, the country's most populous city, was among those targeted, as was the capital, Jerusalem. Emergency sirens wailed throughout the country as missiles rained down.

Today is the final day of the Jewish High Holidays, and red alerts were put in place in several areas targeted by Palestinian group Hamas, which is recognised as a terrorist group by Israel and countries such as the US, UK and Canada.

The Daily Star reports the attacks come after chilling prophecy by prophet Michel de N'-os-t'-re-da-me. He wrote 2023 would see a "great war", after he correctly predicting a number of significant historical events over the last 100 years.

From the rise of Adolf Hitler to the shooting of President John F Kennedy and even last year's cost of living crisis, he pointed to a number of harrowing happenings in history.

He wrote of 2023: "Seven months the Great War, people dead of evil-doing. Ro-u-e-n, Ev-re-u-x shall not fall to the King." It was thought the alarming prediction could al-lu-de to a World War 3-es-qu-e conflict stemming from the troubles in Ukraine arising next year.

But after today's rocket strike, it appears his foreseen conflict could be more wide-reaching than previously thought. Gunmen also bulldozed a section of the barbed wire separating Palestine from Israel and stormed the country.

Others parachuted to the ground., while street fights between Hamas members and police broke out around the border. At least 50 IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians are said to have been taken prisoner.

Local news outlets say many are thought to have been killed, while hundreds have been injured, with some left badly hurt. Senior Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif issued a rally cry on social media.

He took to the group's channels to call on Palestinians to join what he called "Operation Al-Aq-sa Storm". He said: "This is the day of the greatest battle end the last occupation on earth," and called for fighters to "set the earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers."

The fighting comes more than a year and a half into Russia's infamous full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Vladimir Putin announced the move in February 2022 and the two countries have been locked in conflict ever since.

The war has brought on fears of a full-scale World War Three event, with the Russian despot repeatedly issuing threats of nuclear action against the West. If this were to happen, yet another one of Nostradamus' predictions would seemingly come true.

While many of his predictions have come true, several have not. An asteroid strike he foresaw last year did not take place, and his claim that artificial intelligence robots would take over the earth by the end of 2022 was also wrong.
