~An a-qu-i-la (Classical La-t-i'n[ˈa'kᶣɪ'la], "eagle") was a prominent symbol used in ancient Rome, especially as the standard of a Roman legion. A le-g-io-n-ar-y known as an a-qu-i-lifer, the "eagle-bearer", carried this standard. Each legion carried one eagle.~
