DESCRIPTION
The goddess Aphrodite is carried across the sea in a cockle-shell by a pair of Ichthyocentaurs (fish-tailed centaurs) following her birth from the sea-foam. A pair of infant love-gods, Eros and Himeros, sommersault in the air above her head. The marine deities have the upper bodies of men, the lower foreparts of horses, and the tails of fish, and are each crowned with a pair of crab-claw "horns". The two figures are labelled Aphros (Sea-Foam) and Bythos (Sea-Depths) in Greek.

SEA GODS
The ancient Greek term for sea gods was "T-h-eoi H-al-io-i" or "T-h-e-oi Ei-n-al-io-i." These deities were commanded by the Sea-King Poseidon and his queen Am-p-h-i-t-ri-t-e. Ma-ri-t-i-me scenes featuring a host of sea-gods were very popular in G-re-co-Roman mosaic.

(ikh-t-h-y-s, ke-nt-a-u-r-os)
THE IKHTHYOKENTAUROI (Ichthyocentaurs) were a pair of centaurine sea-gods with the upper bodies of men, the lower fore-quarters of horses, and the serpentine tails of fish. Their brows were crowned with a pair of lobster-claw horns.
The fish-centaurs were named Bythos (Sea-Depths) and Aphros (Sea-Foam). They were brothers of the wise k-k-e-nt-a-u-r-os Kh-e-iron (centaur Chi-ro-n) and like him were perhaps regarded as wise teachers.
The sea-centaurs were probably derived from the Fish-Deities of Syrian mythology which carried Ash-t-ar-t-e ashore after her birth. These were placed amongst the stars as the constellation P-i-s-c-es.
