This was the moment so many Americans, both on Capitol Hill and across the country, were waiting on. Over and over again we heard: “I’ll wait to talk about impeachment until the Mueller investigation is over.”
It’s been nearly a week since Special Counsel Robert Mueller completed his report, and we’re still waiting on the truth. Mr. Trump’s circle of enablers is working overtime to cover up his crimes. The House unanimously passed a resolution calling for the public release of the report — but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked it in the Senate. Attorney General William Barr, who never supported the investigation from the get-go and was hand-picked by Mr. Trump to protect himself, summarized the report down to just four pages — suspiciously brief, given Mr. Mueller spent a thorough two years working on his investigation. These conclusions should raise more than eyebrows.
But our movement has known for a while now that impeachment proceedings should — and need to — happen, regardless of what lines Mr. Barr has picked out from Mr. Mueller’s report. We have news clips of Mr. Trump in Helsinki accepting Vladimir Putin’s denials of Russian interference in our elections, explicitly choosing to ignore U.S. intelligence and the Americans who risk their lives to protect this country. We have indictments of six former Trump advisers, 26 Russian nationals, three Russian companies, one California man, and one London-based lawyer.
This is a president who has repeatedly attacked journalists and undermined the freedom of the press. He’s separated thousands of immigrant children from their parents and held them in camps and cages. And meanwhile, he’s making millions off of this presidency by making his family business his real priority over the American people.
