Earthquake Strikes Market Town In Rutland
The tremor is felt some 25 miles away from its epicentre but so far there are no reports of injuries or damage.
A town in the East Midlands has been shaken by an earthquake, with the tremors reportedly felt as far away as Leicester and Peterborough.
The British Geological Survey says the tremor, which occurred at 10.40pm on Tuesday, was centred 1.4 miles (2km) below Oakham in Rutland.
It measured 2.8 magnitude but there were no reports of injuries or damage.
Residents of Rutland have experienced earthquakes before - a 3.8 magnitude tremor was recorded in January and a 3.2 in April last year.
Some people reported feeling the quake 40km (25 miles) away from the epicentre, according to The British Geological Survey.
David Roberts tweeted: "Wow! Felt my first ever earthquake! Usually asleep when we've had them. #Rutland #RutlandWater #earthquake."
Joanna Aitkens-Sayers also posted on social media, saying: "#earthquake last night in #Rutland - smaller than before but quite a jolt."
Others in the area were somewhat underwhelmed by the tremor.
Bex Key tweeted: "Earthquake number 3 of my time in Rutland. Genuinely thought it was a lorry! Smallest of the ones I've felt so far."
