Parts of Aman Setu sink due to earthquake
October 09, 2005 18:18 IST
A part of the Aman Setu, a key bridge on the Line of Control near Uri, on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road link has sunk due to the massive earthquake that hit the region.
"Two piers of the Aman Setu have been damaged on the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir side and has sunk there. It is now unoperational," Defence spokesman Colonel J S Joneja said.
"I would assume that even crossing the bridge by foot would be hazardous," he said.

With the sinking of the bridge, the next trip of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus scheduled to ply on October 20 has been put in jeopardy.
There is very little possibility of the bus plying on the route on its next scheduled date on October 20, the spokesman said.
The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road has been blocked at many places due to landslides triggered by the quake and would require some time to make the entire stretch motorable again.
A nine-kilometre stretch between Jula to Kaman Post, the last point on the Indian side of the LoC, has been blocked by landslides caused by heavy overnight rainfall, officials said, adding that there were many other smaller stretches which were blocked by boulders and landslides.
"We have to see the other side of road as well which falls in PoK. If that is motorable, we will also make our best efforts to restore," they added.
