It has been a decade since director Ron Howard and his leading man, Tom Hanks, started deciphering author Dan Brown's literary puzzles for the big screen. Starting with The Da Vinci Code in 2006, the Robert Langdon series extended through Angels & Demons and continues later this month with Inferno, and adaptation of the most recent Brown adventure that sends Hanks on a mission through Florence, Italy to stop a global terrorist. Die hard fans of Brown's works, however, will realize that by fast-forwarding to Inferno, Howard and Hanks overlooked the third book in the Robert Langdon timeline -- the D.C.-set The Lost Symbol from 2009 -- and I wondered if there was a reason.
Luckily, I was able to sit down with Tom Hanks in Florence, Italy to discuss Inferno and his work on this fast-moving franchise, and when it comes to The Lost Symbol, he told me:
That was interesting because we actually worked on [Lost Symbol] for a while to see if there was something, and at the end of the day, Washington, D.C. and the question of the Masons was very reminiscent of the theoretical dilemmas of both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. We had to say that we don't quite think there is something [there] to truly hang on. But, Dan Brown, who is very secretive, is working on another one. We have no idea if it's going to come down the pike -- if we're going to want to jump on it or not. We'll see. The good news is contractually, we don't have to. [Laughs] This is all our voluntary actions.
So it sounds like, even in Inferno is a huge hit, the idea of Tom Hanks and Ron Howard going back to adapt The Lost Symbol is a non-starter, because the plot and themes are too similar to what the duo did in The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. These stories have been told out of order before. In the book sense, Angels came before Da Vinci, but Ron Howard and Sony chose to start with Da Vinci because that novel was a global sensation. After audiences flocked to the first Robert Langdon story, the studio greenlit its predecessor, and Angels did well at the box office, as well.
Dan Brown, meanwhile, is working on his fifth Robert Langdon story, Origin, which has a 2017 release date, and I assume that's the project to which Tom Hanks refers when he says that if it "comes down the pike," they may consider it. Ironically, earlier this year, Ron Howard explained why they had a tough time cracking the story of The Lost Symbol, leading to them passing on it. You can read his insights into that film's development here. And here is Tom Hanks talking Inferno and The Lost Symbol:

If you haven’t read The Lost Symbol or any of the other Da Vinci Code literature, don’t worry, you’ll do just fine immersing yourself into Peacock’s original series.
The show’s premise revolves around the disappearance of famed researcher and Masonic enthusiast Peter Solomon (Eddie Izzard) who’s long time protege Robert Langdon is coerced into participating in a global religious conspiracy whose leader has kidnapped Peter in an effort to fulfill an ancient prophecy and learn the secrets of some universal wisdom that once uncovered might destroy all of existence. However, there are a lot of steps between Mal’akh (Beau Knapp) the cult leader, and his obtaining of said wisdom, and the only way to accurately traverse the path to his goal is with the help of Robert. Oh and the C.I.A is trying to coerce Robert into working for them. This is all sounding a bit familiar.
In Robert’s pursuit of lifting every veil to discover a new hidden truth in this deadly game, he acquires a stubborn assistant that will not take no for an answer, namely Katherine Solomon (Valorie Curry), Peter’s daughter and Robert’s ex who will do anything to find her father. Again this is all feeling very familiar and as far as the storyline goes I think I’ll let you take it from here because you already know where this will lead. However, as far as the quality of the show, it’s really good with a fairly smooth storyline, good character interactions, the secondary stories are easy to follow and don’t detract from the primary, the cinematography is interesting and at times quite beautiful, and the music score absolutely holds its own. If you enjoyed The Da Vinci Code movies/books I think you’ll really enjoy The Lost Symbol.

(ăsh)'The Lost Symbol' Episode 2: Is CIA spook Inoue Sato working with Mal'akh?
In 'The Lost Symbol' Episode 2, Sato's keen interest in Mal'akh is explained when she says he was a matter of national security
Spoilers for 'The Lost Symbol' Episode 2: 'The Araf'
'The Lost Symbol' was off to a gripping start and continued in the same vein in the second episode, 'The Araf'. The storylines included that of Peter Solomon's (Eddie Izzard's) potential escape, Katherine (Valorie Curry), and Robert Langdon (Ashley Zukerman) being rescued by Warren Bellamy, the architect of the Capitol, and a Freemason. As they lie low and decide on the next course of action, the director of the CIA's office of security Inoue Sato (Somalee Montano) tracks down Bellamy while continuing her search for Langdon and Mal'akh.
Sato's keen interest in Mal'akh is explained when she says he was a matter of national security, however, there have been theories on whether she is actually on his side. In the first couple of episodes, she rather looks to chase Langdon to get to Mal'akh and in the second chapter, she pursues Bellamy.
We could be wrong since the book suggests that she was on the right side of the law. However, the series may induce a bit of a twist. Dan Brown's novel sees Bellamy questioning if she was Mal'akh's side just for her to reveal disturbing evidence that shocks the architect.

'The Lost Symbol' Episode 1 Review: No reinventing Robert Langdon, just a fresh take
Sato also gets impersonated in the episode by Mal'akh once who pretends he was part of the CIA, and in all probability, this debunks the theory as to why she is not in cahoots with Mal'akh. Going back to the book, she eventually works together with Langdon as they managed to discover the antagonist's schemes. That said, she does face trouble according to the synopsis of episode 3 titled 'Murmuration'.
The official logline reads: "With the CIA hot on their trail and Mal'akh demanding they split up, Robert and Katherine turn to Nuñez for help; Sato interrogates Bellamy and is pressured by her superiors to produce answers for the growing number of questions regarding the case."
'The Lost Symbol' drops on Peacock with a new episode every Thursday.
