Govt seals Prerana Shah’s “dowry land”

The Nepal Trust has sealed the house of Prerana Shah, daughter of former King Gyanendra Shah, which she had received as dowry on Tuesday. The government padlocked the front gate of the house that is inside a 15 Ropani 1 Anna (1 ropani = 508.74 square meters) land in Chauni, Kathmandu in the presence of Ward Office and Nepal Police officials.

Office of The Nepal Trust Executive secretary Ramesh Prasad Singh informed that the property was padlocked after the concerned individuals failed to empty the compound following multiple notices.

“We had asked them to clear the property multiple times and they came up with various excuses each time,” said Singh, “They locked the front gate and left the property when we got there, so we padlocked the compound on top of their lock.”

According to Singh, the Trust had issued notice at three different occasions regarding the same to the concerned individuals.

“When they did not heed to the latest notice, we discussed the matter with the Home Minister and sealed the compound,” said Singh, “Now the occupants can contact the Trust and clear the house and the compound.”

The government on December 16, 2007 had decided to take possession of a plot of land in Chhauni area that Prerana received from her parents as a dowry.

Following the seizure, Prerana had moved the apex court in February 2015 with affidavits and testimonials that suggested the plot of land was awarded to her by her parents and that she was its rightful owner.

In a hearing on the case on June 2015, a division bench of former CJ Ram Kumar Prasad Sah and Justice Cholendra Sumsher Rana had ruled that the office brought the land under its ambit without her consent and nor did it provide her a chance to defend.

On January 5, 2017, a full bench of judges headed by Chief Justice Sushila Karki, justices Deepak Kumar Karki and Sapana Pradhan Malla revoked its earlier directive to Office of Nepal Trust decision to return 15.1 ropanis of land to Prerana Shah.
