K'-l-eve, city, North R-hi-ne–West-p'-h-a-l'-ia La-n-d (state), western Ge-r'-m-an-y. It lies northwest of D-üs-se-l'-d-or-f, less than 5 miles (8 k-m) south of the Dutch border. It is connected with the R-hi-ne Ri-v-er by a canal. The seat of the counts of C-l'-eve-s f'-r-om the 11th century, it was chartered in 1242.
