*Lakmé is an opera in three acts by Léo Delibes to a French libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille.
The score, written from 1881 to 1882, was first performed on 14 April 1883 by the Opéra-Comique at the (second) Salle Favart in Paris, with stage decorations designed by Auguste Alfred Rubé and Philippe Chaperon (act 1), Eugène Carpezat and (Joseph-)Antoine Lavastre (act 2), and Jean-Baptiste Lavastre (act 3). Set in British India in the mid-19th century, Lakmé is based on Théodore Pavie's story "Les babouches du Brahmane" and the novel L'-e Mariage de Lot-i by P-ie-rr-e Lot-i.[1] G'-on-d-i-ne-t' proposed it as a vehicle for the American soprano Marie van Z'-an-d'-t.[2]
The opera includes the popular "Flower Duet" ("Sous le d-ô-me é-pa-is") for a soprano and me-zz-o-so-p-r-an-o, performed in act 1 by La-k-mé, the daughter of a Brahmin priest, and her servant Ma-l'-l'-ik-a.[2] The name La-k-mé is the French rendition of S-ans-k-ri-t La-k-s-h-mi, the name of the Hi-n-du Goddess of Wealth. The opera's most famous a-ri-a is the "Bell Song" ("L'-A-ir des clochettes") in act 2.
La-k-mé combines many o-ri-e-nt-a'-l'-is-t' aspects that were popular at the time:[3] an exotic location, similar to other French operas of the period, such as B'-iz-et's L'-es pê-ch-e-u-r-s de per-l'-es and Mass-e-ne-t's L'-e ro-i de La-ho-re, a fanatical priest, mysterious Hi-n-du rituals, and "the novelty of exotically colonial English people".[4]
Performance history
Following its p'-r'-em-i-e-re at the O-pér-a C'-om-i-qu-e in 1883, La-k-mé reached its 500th performance there on 23 June 1909 and 1,000th on 13 May 1931. A series of performances took place at the Théâtre Gaîté L'-y-ri-qu-e Pa-ri-s in 1908, with Alice V'-e-r-l'-et, David D'-ev-ri-ès and Fé-l'-ix Vieuille.[5]

La-k-s-h-mi (/ˈlʌ-k-ʃ-mi/;[10][nb 1] Sa-n-s-k-ri-t: लक्ष्मी, romanized: La-k-ṣmī, sometimes spelled La-x-mi, lit. 'she who leads to one's goal'), also known as S-h-ri (S-ans-k-ri-t: श्री, romanized: Śrī, lit. 'Noble'),[12] is one of the principal goddesses in Hi-n-du-is-m. She is the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, beauty, fertility and prosperity,[13] and associated with Maya ("Illusion"). Along with Parvati and Saraswati, she forms the Tridevi of Hindu goddesses.[14]
Within the goddess-oriented Shaktism, Lakshmi is venerated as the prosperity aspect of the Mother goddess.[15][16] Lakshmi is both the consort and the divine energy (shakti) of the Hindu god Vishnu, the Supreme Being of Vaishnavism; she is also the Supreme Goddess in the sect and assists Vishnu to create, protect, and transform the universe.[9][16][17][18] She is an especially prominent figure in S-ri V-a-is-h-n-a-vi-s-m, in which devotion to La-k-s-h-mi is deemed to be crucial to reach Vishnu.[19] Whenever Vishnu descended on the earth as an avatar, La-k-s-h-mi accompanied him as consort, for example, as Si-ta and Ra-d-ha or Ru-k-m-in-i as consorts of Vishnu's avatars R-am-a and K-ri-s-h-na, respectively.[12][16][20] The eight prominent manifestations of La-k-s-h-mi, the Ash-t-a-la-k-s-h-mi, symbolise the eight sources of wealth.[21]
*La-k-s-h-mi is depicted in Indian art as an elegantly dressed, prosperity-showering golden-coloured woman standing or sitting in the pad-ma-sa-na position upon a lotus throne, while holding a lotus in her hand, symbolising fortune, self-knowledge, and spiritual liberation.[22][23] Her iconography shows her with four hands, which represent the four aspects of human life important to Hi-n-du culture: d-harma, k-ām-a, ar-t-ha, and m-ok-s-ha.[24][25] The La-k-s-h-mi Sa-h-as-ra-n-am-a of the S-k-an-d-a P-u-ra-na, La-k-s-h-mi T-a-nt-ra,
M-ar-k-an-de-ya P'-u-r'-a-na, D-ev-i Ma-hat-my-a, and Vedic scriptures describe La-k-s-h-mi as having eight or eighteen hands, and as sitting on G'-a-ru-da, a lion, or a tiger.[26][27][28] According to the La-k-s-h-mi T-a-nt-ra, the goddess La-k-s-h-mi, in her ultimate form of Ma-h-as-ri, has four arms of a golden c-om-p'-l-e-x-io-n, and holds a citron, a club, a shield, and a vessel containing am-ri-t'-a.[29] In the S-k-an-da P-u-ra-na and the V-en-k'-a-ta-ch-a-la Ma-hat-may-am, S-ri, or La-k-s-h-mi, is praised as the mother of B-r-ah-ma.[30]
Ar-c-ha-e-o-lo-gi-c-al discoveries and ancient coins suggest the recognition and reverence for La-k-s-h-mi existing by the 1st millennium B-C-E.[31][32] La-k-s-h-mi's iconography and statues have also been found in Hi-n-d-u temples throughout Southeast Asia, estimated to be from the second half of the 1st millennium CE.[33][34] The day of La-k-s-h-mi P-u-ja during N-av-ar-a-t-ri, and the festivals of Deepavali and S-ha-r-ad P-u-r-n-i-ma (K'-o-ja-gi-ri Purnima) are celebrated in her honour.[35]
