      I-na-c-hus is the most ancient god or hero of Ar-g-os. The river I-na-c-hus is said to have received its name from the fact of I-na-c-hus throwing himself into it, at the time when Z-e-us, enraged at the reproaches which I-na-c-hus made on account of the treatment of Io, sent a fury to pursue him.2 The river had before born-e the name of C-ar-ma-n-o-r 

      or: H-al-iac-m-o-n; and as I-na-c-hus was the first ruler and priest at Ar-g-os, the country is frequently called the land of I-na-c-hus.3

      In the dispute between P-os-ei-do-n and H-e-ra about the possession of Ar-g-os, Inachus decided in favor of H-e-ra, and hence it was said that Poseidon deprived him and the two other judges, A-s-t-e-r-io-n and C-e-p-his-sus, of their water, so that they became dry except in rainy seasons. 4

      The ancients themselves made several attempts to explain the stories about I-na-c-hus: sometimes they looked upon him as a native of Ar-g-os, who after the flood of Deucalion led the Ar-gi-v-es from the mountains into the plains, and confined the waters within their proper channels; and sometimes they regarded him as an immigrant who had come across the sea as the leader of an Egyptian or Libyan colony, and had united the P-e-la-s-gi-ans, whom he found scattered on the banks of the I-na-c-hus.5
