Her name, Ar-wen, means 'noble maiden'. She bore the so-b-ri-qu-e-t"Evenstar" (or Evening Star), as the most beautiful of the last generation of High Elvesin Middle-earth.

Aragorn fell in love with Arwen at first sight. Some thirty years later, the two were reunited in Lórien. Arwen reciprocated Aragorn's love, and on the mound of Cerin Amroth they committed themselves to marry each other. In making that choice, Arwen gave up the Elvish immortality available to her as a daughter of Elrond and agreed to remain in Middle-earth instead of traveling to the Undying Lands.

Indeed, Arwen was held to be the reappearance in likeness of her ancestor Lúthien, fairest of all the Elves, who was called Nightingale (Tinúviel).

As related in The History of Middle-earth, Tolkien conceived the character of "Elrond's daughter" late in the writing.[2][3] Prior to this, he considered having Aragorn marry Éowyn.[4]Arwen Undómiel is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. ... and Arwen relates that Aragorn and Arwen had a son, Eldarion, and at least two unnamed daughters .

●Using the family-tree from http://lotrproject.com/, by my quick-count it seems Arwen and Aragorn II are first-cousins either 62 or 67 times removed, depending on whether you go through Aragorn's great x 14 grandfather (Arvedui) or great x 14 grandmother (Firiel) who both edescended from Elendil (Arvedui on the Isildur side, Firiel on the Anarion side).
Hence Elendil is Aragorn's great x 38 grandfather as well as Aragorn's great x 43 grandfather.

The term "removed" refers to the number of generations separating the cousins themselves. So your first cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your first cousin. Your second cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your second cousin. And your first cousin twice removed is the grandchild (or grandparent) of your first cousin.
