HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNww) - From Hawaii Kai to Waianae the ground was shaking. A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Honolulu at 3:28 Sunday afternoon. The quake was centered off Oahu's south shore, about ten miles from Diamond Head.
Jimmy Austin, of Wilhelmina Rise wrote: "thought my daughter was running around the house and a huge gust of wind came."
Eli Sharp felt it in Niu Valley. He says: "it shook the whole house for like two seconds. The dogs started barking too."
And Nancy Lagmay Tolentino, of Kaneohe, wrote: "it felt like I was inside a boat... Rocking!"
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center quickly announced there was no threat of a tsunami.
"Calls from East Oahu, Kaneohe, downtown area. It is very unusual. I think this is the second time since I've been here, the last five years. And this is very far from the Big Island, not related to the volcano. Probably some tectonic adjustments on the sea floor" said geophysicist Vindell Hsu.
Initially the reports showed that the earthquake was centered right under Palolo Valley, but the epicenter estimates were later revised.
This type of activity is normal. The frequency of seismic events decreases the further you move towards the older part of the island chain.
Oahu and Kauai are not really used to it. The last time there was a similar occurrence near Oahu was nearly two years ago. That earthquake was centered 14 miles to the south of Waianae, of 3.0 magnitude.
