The Divine Names: Elokim, YKVK and Ekyeh
The Divine Names: Elokim, YKVK and Ekyeh
ELOKIM
The Creator Himself is absolutely singular, containing no plurality whatsoever. He is the most absolute unity beyond comprehension imaginable, He cannot be defined for He is incorporeal and unconceptual(because concepts also represent elements of plurality). Therefore, plurality only came into existence with the advent of creation. The many Names of G-d, which all derive from the Name YKVK, refer to the various ways that He interacts, directs, reveals and manifests Himself within Creation.
The Name Elokim, which is used throughout the first chapter of Bereshit (Genesis), refers to the 32 streams of manifestation of delineation and definition of the Creator. As often the case, this may cause confusion if not properly understood. How can the Creator be in absolute unity containing no plurality and yet be referred to in a plural sense?
The Creator's Essence is One with Him, which is often referred to as His infinite Light. The scriptures say that G-d cannot directly be in contact with creation because His presence is too much to bare, and this is where the function of His Infinite Light is represented. It is the infinite Light of the Creator that He manifests into creation and is the sole essence that is creation itself. In other words, all that exists within creation is dependent upon the Creator's Infinite Light, all that exists is the Creator's Infinite Light, which is One with the Creator and His infinite Light is the means by which He enters creation. Therefore, the Infinite Light of the Creator is what grants existence to absolutely everything in creation and is absolutely everything in creation, yet is One with the Creator.
It is by this reason that the Name Elokim is plural, it does not mean that the Creator is multiple or defined as more than one G-d. The concept of a multiple G-d is not in any in accordance with the Biblical scriptures. In other words, the Name Elokim represents G-d's extrapolation of His essence, which serves to delineate and define a particular aspect or aspects of creation. In a simpler explanation, the Name Elokim represents the totality of existence through the Creator from the very concepts of thought to the very substance of the universe.
The Name Elokim in relation to the highest and most powerful Name of G-d, the ineffable Name YKVK, can be easily mistaken for the other sense that the word "elokim" refers to other g-ds or powers. Therefore, the conclusion is that there are only two ways that Elokim is used as a word and as a Name. In Genesis, the Name Elokim refers to YKVK only. With the Name YKVK Elokim, the scriptures are revealing that YKVK the Creator is the only thing that has manifested Himself into creation as the creative and imaginative forces. It is revealing that YKVK has created within Himself attributes that are closely significant only to Himself. Furthermore, in the scriptures, it is by this reason that the Name Elokim follows the Name YKVK.
YKVK
The highest and most important Name of G-d is YKVK, which is referred to as the Tetragrammaton or HaShem. Not only is this the ineffable Name of the Creator and has great significance in the scriptural texts but there is infinite meaning behind it. We will only discuss some of these meanings here in this commentary.
The Name YKVK derives from three root Hebrew words; "yehyeh" (he will be), "hoveh" (he is) and"hayah" (he was). These three root words are the definitive foundation of the Divine Name YKVK, stating the Creator’s everlasting eternal existence without beginning and without end. This is precisely why it is called to as the Essential Name of G-d.
"Hayah" means "He was"
"Hoveh" means "He is"
"Yehyeh" means "He will be"
In simple terms, keeping in mind that the Hebrew letters being the definitive quantitative and qualitative elements of creation, the letters that spell the words "yehyeh, hoveh and hayah" are Yud (Y), Heh (H) and Vav (V). The unique distinction here is that these same letters are the core letters that form the Name YKVK.
"He Was, He is, He Will Be" is the simplest definition of the infinite and essential Name of G-d, however there is much more to reveal about this Name. The most important realization refers to the statement"All that is formed and all that is spoken came from one Name." Everything that has existed, does exist and will exist comes from the Name YKVK. It is by this reason we read in the scriptures "YKVK Elokim."
The Torah has also been referred to as the Light of the Creator, being that it is the absolute Word of G-d written by the finger of G-d. Another reference to the infinite Light of the Creator is that the Torah is the heart of YKVK, for all that was, is and ever will be is concealed in the Torah. The first letter of the Torah; Bet (B), and the last letter; Lamed (L) spells the word "Lev," which spells the Hebrew word for "heart."
Taking into consideration that the Torah is the heart of the Creator containing the infinite Light of the Creator, the Name YKVKnow can be further explained. The two letters Lamed and Bet share another unique distinction. As a prefix, Lamed means "to," and Bet means "in." The three core letters of the Tetragrammaton; Yud, Heh and Vav can also serve as suffixes for personal pronouns. The suffix Yud means "me," Heh means "her," and Vav means "him." In the entire alphabet, there are only two letters to which these suffixes can be joined, which are Lamed and Bet.
"Li" (Lamed Yud) means "To me"
"Lah" (Lamed Heh) means "To her"
"Lo" (Lamed Vav) means "To Him"
"Bi" (Bet Yud) means "In me"
"Bah" (Bet Heh) means "In her"
"Bo" (Bet Vav) means "In him"
So, these two letters are the only ones in the entire alphabet, which combine with the letters of the Tetragrammaton (YKVK) in this manner. What this all explains is that the Name YKVK reveals that absolutely everything is within the Creator, and is dependent upon the Creator to exist. The prefix Lamed (to) alludes that everything comes from the Light of the Creator. The suffix Bet (in) alludes that everything is within the Creator.
From the four letters of the Name YKVK does His infinite Light emanate into creation, and is the essence by which all that exists is in a state of being. This is why the scriptures say in Zachariah 14:9,“YKVK and His Name is One (Echad).” Again revealing that the Creator and His Light are One, moreover, the Name YKVK is the direct link between creation and G-d Himself. As we discussed earlier, the many Names of G-d refer to the various ways that He interacts, directs, reveals and manifests Himself within Creation. Now looking at the Name " YKVK," we can understand how it is that this Name alone supplies the life force for all creation.
EKYEH
The Divine Name Ekyeh is unique in that it holds one of the deepest mysteries within the Name YKVK. The Name Ekyeh means "I Will Be." In the book of Exodus, verse 3:14-15, G-d told Moses that His Name was YKVK, but He also said in the same breath that His Name was Ekyeh. Specifically G-d said"Ekyeh Asher Ekyeh" which means "I Will Be Who I Will Be." Why did G-d reveal these two Names in reference to Himself in this manner?
If YKVK means "He was, He is, He will be" why did G-d tell Moses "I will be Who I will be?" As discussed earlier in difference instances, the many Names of G-d, which all derive from the Name YKVK, refer to the various ways that He interacts, directs, reveals and manifests Himself within Creation. Since we now know that each Name derive or emanate from the Name YKVK, we should analyze the significance of the Name Ekyeh.
YKVK is referring to the Creator in the third person, where Ekyeh refers to Him in the first person. Since the Creator is eternally in a state of being, the statement would be that "He is." In reference to the word mentioned earlier "yehyeh" (he will be) the same letters appear that are in the Name Ekyeh.
Every Hebrew letter is not merely a letter, but it is a manifestation of the Creator's divine consciousness within creation and serve as the elemental prospects of His infinite Light. Therefore each letter holds an amount of information, concealing a particular aspect of G-d's knowledge.
Each letter is represented by its meaning and power by the shape of the actual letter and by the value of its number, thus representing the delineation and definition of a particular aspect or aspects of creation. Another important realization is that the Hebrew letters are the roots to all creation, which all emanate from the Name YKVK.
The apex of letter Yud, being the smallest letter of the alphabet, represents the "Will" of the Creator. The letter Yud itself represents the “Wisdom” (Chochmah) of the Creator. The apex of the letter Yud is a very small point at the top of the letter and then a little stroke that points downward. It is by the will of the Creator that anything came into being, therefore the will of G-d is the highest faculty, the highest delineated and defined attribute of G-d. The will to do or be must be done with wisdom to do or be and He so shared this wisdom with creation by sending it down into the rest of creation. And this is why the Will and Wisdom are contained with the letter Yud.
The Name Ekyeh refers to the apex of the letter Yud of the Name YKVK, representing the Will of the Creator. This is important to recognize in the meaning of the Name Ekyeh “I Will Be.” The letters that spell the Name Ekyeh is Alef (silent/A/E), Heh (H), Yud (Y), and Heh (H). The letter Alef is really silent, but is the sound that is made before anything is spoken and can only be represented in English by the letter “a” or “e.” This represents something significant in this understanding. When the Name Ekyeh is spoken it is revealing the apex of the letter Yud, thus representing the Will of G-d or the highest faculty of G-d’s attributes within creation. The silence of the letter Alef alludes to the state of G-d’s will, thus explaining the purpose of its place in the letter Yud of the Name YKVK.
Now there can be explanation as to why G-d told Moses His Name was Ekyeh Asher Ekyeh. YKVK will always be in a position to will anything He wants, therefore when He said "I Will Be Who I Will Be" He was revealing that even though He was and He is, He will always be whatsoever or whosoever He wills to be. In this, it is now evident that the deeper meaning of the Name YKVK is “I will be what I was, I will who I am, I will be what I will be.” When G-d said “I Will Be Who I Will Be” He was expressing that even though He is always in a state of “I am” He will always be in a position to “Will” anything He wants. Therefore, the Name Ekyeh is the expression of His inner essence, the infinite Light that emanates from Him will always be.
The Name YKVK now really means "I Was, I Am, I Will." In correspondence to "He Was, He Is, He Will Be" and "I Will Be Who I Will Be" we can see the correlation represented by these two Names YKVK and Ekyeh.
Hayah (He was) Ekyeh (I will be what I was)
Hoveh (He is) Asher (I will be who I am)
Yehyeh (He will be) Ekyeh (I will be what I will be)
This is one of the deepest meanings of the Name YKVK regarding the Name Ekyeh. Ekyeh Asher Ekyeh is the revealed explanation of what is concealed within the Name YKVK.
