How the earthquake compares with others

To put it into perspective:

'Events of this magnitude only happen in the UK every 2-3 years'

Here’s the first round-up from the Press Association:
An earthquake which shook parts of the UK on Saturday is the sort of event which happens only once “every two or three years”, experts have said.
The British Geographical Survey (BGS) said the epicentre was 20km (12 miles) north of Swansea, with a 4.4 magnitude at a depth of 7.4km (4.6m).
A BGS tweet added: “Events of this magnitude only happen in the UK every 2-3 years.”
People across south Wales and south west England said they felt what they thought was an earthquake this afternoon.
James Leonard wrote on Twitter: “Wow was that an earthquake in Swansea my house just shook #earthquake earthquake.”
Mark Wyatt, a third year student at Cardiff University, was entering his house in the city centre when he heard a “weird, deep rumbling sound” around 2.30pm.
The 21-year-old said: “We heard the noises before we felt the rumble, and then the house shook for a couple of seconds before it stopped.”
Tremors were felt across the Bristol Channel into England too.
Seth Piper wrote on Twitter: “OK pretty sure I just experienced my first ever earthquake ... in Bristol, UK?”

'No damage reported'

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) wrote on Twitter: “No damage is reported and if any should remain very limited. No tsunami neither.”
Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We have had a half a dozen calls to report the earthquake. We have responded to one in the Bristol area to give advice after concerns about structural damage.
“We attended the home in the Knowle area and made checks and couldn’t find any damage.
“We would encourage anyone with similar concerns, particularly if they have issues with subsidence, to contact a structural engineer or their landlord.”

Fire and Rescue Service

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said they have received calls about buildings being damaged from the earthquake and have attended two to make sure they are safe.

No reports of injuries so far

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: “The force incident manager said they have received a handful of calls after the earthquake.
“The fire service has received several calls about buildings being damaged.
“But so far there has been no reports of injuries resulting from this.”

Quake felt across the UK

It’s thought that around ten million people felt the quake, which shook people and buildings across the UK.

Biggest earthquake in the area since 1906

How was Bath affected?

Some didn't believe it at first

Henry and Kerry in Bannerdown: “My wife and I had popped out to the shop and on our return, my 13-year-old daughter informed us that there was an earthquake and things were falling off the shelves in her bedroom at our house in Bannerdown.

“Our 12-year-old son heard nothing and referred to her as an idiot. He was playing ‘Fortnite’ with his headset on and felt/saw no quake.

We sided with him (not the idiot bit) until we read the Chronicle report!”

'Fascinating'

Helen Astil said: I noticed the earthquake in Bath! I live in Odd Down and my bedroom chest of drawers and all the things on top of it rattled and I wondered what caused it, now I know!
“Fascinating.”

Met Office

Just in

'I have never experienced that before'

Paul Collins from Weston: “ I was sat down on my sofa and approx. 2.35pm the sofa started to shake and then the doors started to vibrate.

My dog Cali started to bark I looked out of the window and the telegraph pole was shaking,

It was quite scary, I have never experienced that before”

'It was a scary moment'

Louise from Fairfield Park: “I just wanted to report what I experienced around 2:30.
“I was sat on the sofa working on my laptop with my puppy on my shoulder - the room shock hard the sofa moved vastly the puppy jumped up barked like mad - I checked the wall that the sofa is on thinking maybe it was the neighbours but on the far side of the room I have a crystal lamp and the crystals started moving and chiming with the movement.
“It was a scary moment.”

Unforgettable cinema trip

Grace Williams from The Little Theatre Cinema said: “Sadly we didn’t get any pictures, however myself and a colleague were in the office at the cinema when suddenly the office desks and sofa started shaking.
“We ran around the cinema checking everything was alright but no one on the lower floors felt it. I just chatted with some of the customers coming out of Phantom Thread in Screen 2 - some thought that the people behind them were kicking their seat, others thought that the film downstairs was so loud it was shaking their seats from below.
“They were very glad to be told that it was a tremor and that it would be a cinema trip they’ll never forget!”
