Award-winning actor Sir Ian McKellen, who played "Gandalf" in the Lord of the Rings series, is openly gay and in a recent interview about his life said that "Hollywood has mistreated women in every possible way" and that "half of Hollywood is gay."

In the May 22 interview in Time Out, McKellen was asked, "Why do you think there are so few gay characters in blockbusters?"

McKellen said, "Well, nobody looks to Hollywood for social commentary, do they? They only recently discovered that there were black people in the world."

"Hollywood has mistreated women in every possible way throughout its history," he said.
"Gay men don’t exist" in most movies, said McKellen.  “Gods and Monsters , I think, was the beginning of Hollywood admitting that there were gay people knocking around, even though half of Hollywood is gay."

Gods and Monsters was a 1998 film starring McKellen as James Whale, a real-life gay Hollywood director known most for the 1931 movie Frankenstein and the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein.

Gods and Monsters won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and McKellen was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Sir Ian McKellen, 78, has received two Oscar nominations over the years, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and six Laurence Olivier Awards.
