Terminator 6 Has Found Its New Male Lead

Despite Terminator Genisys intending to set up a new trilogy of robot assassin-filled action, the movie's poor critical reception and underwhelming commercial performance put the kibosh on that happening. However, the Terminator franchise is throwing in the proverbial towel just yet. With creator James Cameron involved again after more than two decades away and Deadpool's Tim Millerattached as director, the yet-to-be-officially-titled Terminator 6 will try to give this sci-fi property another fresh start, while also maintaining closer ties to the original Terminator movies. The Terminator 6 cast is now slowly coming together, and it looks like the newest addition will be Scream Queens actor Diego Boneta.

Last month, it was reported that Halt and Catch Fire star Mackenzie Davis was being lined up to play a human solider-assassin from the future in Terminator 6, and now THR has heard that Diego Boneta is in negotiations to join her in the science fiction flick. If a deal is finalized, Boneta will reportedly play a human, though no other details about his character were revealed. These two would join Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is once again playing a T-800 (though we may also learn why that Terminator model has that specific facial design), and Linda Hamilton, who will reprise Sarah Connor nearly 30 years after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The search is still underway to cast the new main protagonist who will serve in a similar role as Sarah Connor did in the earlier movies.

Diego Boneta is arguably best known for starring as Pete Martinez in Scream QueensSeason 1, and TV-wise, he also recurred on 90210, Pretty Little Liars and Underemployed. In the cinematic realm, Boneta made his debut in 2012's Rock of Ages, and while he's appeared in numerous other movies since then (including The Titan, which is now playing on Netflix), it's safe to say that if he officially joins Terminator 6, it will be his biggest project yet.

So far no official plot details about Terminator 6have been revealed yet, other than that fact that it will ignore the events of the preceding three Terminator movies and serve as a direct sequel to Terminator 2. Should Terminator 6 be successful, it will be the first installment of a new trilogy, but since Salvation and Genisys has the same aspirations, there's no guarantee yet that this new movie will finally break the pattern.

Originally scheduled to come out in summer 2019, Terminator 6 will now be released on November 22, 2019, putting it in competition with an untitled Marvel/Fox movie that opening weekend.
