JRR Tolkien’s Newest Lord Of The Rings Novel The Fall Of Gondolin To Be Published This Year
It looks like Lord of the Rings fans are in for a treat because another entry to JRR Tolkien’s epic high fantasy novel series is on the way.
According to The Guardian, Tolkien’s book The Fall of Gondolin is set for release this August. Following the publication of Bern and Lutien in May last year, the book is one the Lord of the Rings writer considered the very “first real story of Middle-earth.”
Said to be written by Tolkien while the writer was in the hospital after the Battle of the Somme, The Fall of Gondolin tells the story of a beautiful and mysterious city that finds itself destroyed by dark forces.
“It’s a quest story with a reluctant hero who turns into a genuine hero – it’s a template for everything Tolkien wrote afterward,” said the author of Tolkien and the Great War, John Garth. “It has a dark lord, our first encounter with orcs and balrogs – it’s really Tolkien limbering up for what he would be doing later.”
Pitting the “uttermost evil” of Morgoth against Ulmo, the sea- God, The Fall of Gondolin tells the story of how Morgoth tries to find and destroy the secret city of Gondolin while Ulmo tries to protect the kindred of the elves who live in the city, the Noldor.
Centered around one of the Noldor, a character named Tuor sets out to find Gondolin. When Tuor arrives in the city, he becomes a great man and eventually marries Idril and fathers Earendel, an important character in The Silmarillion. However in the years to come Morgoth finally finds the city and attacks with an army of Balrogs, dragons, and orcs. As the city falls Tuor, his wife and child flee together “looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee southward at the blazing wreckage of their city.”
Containing what Garth says is the “biggest battle narrative outside of The Lord of the Rings,” the new book comes as a surprise to many Tolkien scholars who’ve read in the preface to Bern and Luthien written by the author’s 93-year-old son Christopher Tolkien that the book released in May was the “last book in the long series of editions of my father’s writings.”
But surprise, surprise, look here’s another. The Fall of Gondolin is definitely another welcome addition to Tolkien’s series.
