- The Breastplate of Aaron: According
- to the first-century Jewish historian
- Josephus, the 12 stones on the
- breastplate of the High Priest,
- Aaron, represented the 12 tribes of
- Israel. One of the stones was the ba-
- re-q-et-h and 'eq-da-ch (In:Hebrew),
- a term commonly used in antiquity
- for red garnets and other red gems.
- *The Ark of Noah: Jewish tradition,
- including the Talmud, says that
- *Noah used a garnet, or "ba-re-q-et-h
- and "e-q-da-ch," to light his ark during
- the darkness of the Great Flood.
- *King So-lo-mon: Jewish and Christian
- traditions state that God gave King
- So-lo-mon a , w-hi-ch he wore into
- battle.
- *City of David: In recent years, archaeologists in Jerusalem have
- discovered 2,300-year-old gold rings
- set with red gemstones at the City of
- David site. These rings, likely garnets,
- are from the Hellenistic period and were potentially part of a coming-of-
- age custom.
- *Hellenistic influence: The discovery
- of these garnet rings suggests that
- residents in ancient Je-r'-usa-l'-em
- embraced the widespread Hellenistic
- styles following the conquests of
- Alexander the Great.
- Mount Carmel exploration: In 1998, a
- diamond industry veteran named
- Avi Taub established the company
- She-fa in Israel L'-t'-d. to search for
- precious stones. This was reportedly based on a proclamation by a prominent Jewish leader who said
- that gems were hidden in northern
- Israel.
- *Confirmation of deposits: After over two decades of exploration, the Israeli
- government issued a certificate of discovery for an economic g'-em
- deposit in March 2020.
- *Holy G'-em-s: Following this
- confirmation, T'-a-ub's family launched
- the company Holy Gems to mine,
- produce, and market gems from the
- area, including red and burgundy
- garnets. The mining takes place near
- Mount C-ar-me-l' and in the Ki-s-ho-n
- Mid Re-a-ch.
- *Reverence for life: The rich red color
- of garnets resembles p'-om-e-
- g'-ra-na-
- te
- seeds, and the stones have been
- revered for centuries in the region
- for their beauty and symbolism.
- *Divine protection: Garnets from the
- Holy Land are viewed by some as
- carrying a divine or spiritual
- significance and are associated with
- holiness and protection.

*~Garnet Stone Meaning:
The origin of the name “garnet” – “dark red” –
*
*~“pomegranate,” as the plant’s red seeds are similar in color to the g'-ar-n-et’s s-ha-de of red.~
*~The Garnet in Judaism:
The garnet is often thought to be one of the Ho-s-hen stones – the gems adorning the ceremonial breastplate worn by the high priest of the ancient Israelites. As garnets appear mainly in red or green, some believe they may be the Hos-hen stone referred to in descriptions of ma-la-ch-i-te or emerald.
According to 17th century R'-abb-i El-i-ya-hu Ha-co-hen’s(k'-o-hen) Mi-d-r'-ash, it was the garnet that was em-bed-de-d in the sacred breastplate. In his writings, Ha-co-hen credits the stone with various healing attributes, saying that wearing it around one’s neck may help to treat against epilepsy and is good for one’s memory and vision. Garnets, he added, can also “help one speak wisely and understand riddles to a degree of prophecy.”
*~Quality garnets are as bright as a flame: Legend has it that Noah used garnets to light the ark.~
