Etymology of the name Ki-ri-a-t'-h-sep-her

The name Ki-ri-a-t'-h-sep-her consists of two

elements. The first part is the same as the name

Ki-ri-a-t'-h, which is an older variant of the

Biblical noun קריה (qi-r-ya-h), meaning city. It

derives of the verb קרה (q'a-ra), meaning to meet or get together:

קרר

Root קרר (q-ar-ar) means to cool off in a thermodynamic sense: to go from hot gas to cool liquid to a cold solid. Socially this would describe warring tribes "cooling off" into culturally compatible peoples and liquid trading networks and ultimately the formation of cities and solid nations. Intellectually, diverse viewpoints might congeal into local conventions and ultimately a global standard.

Adjective קר (q-ar) means cool.-

Nouns קר (qo-r) and קרה (q-ar-a) mean cold.

Noun מקרה (me-qe-ra), meaning coolness.

Noun קיר (qi-r) is one of a few words for wall. It might relate to the root because bricks are congealed mud, and a wall is bricks pieced together (non-standard bricks take some puzzling and pounding). The noun קרקע (q-ar-qa') means floor; earth trampled into a compact state. The verb קרקר (q-ar-q-ar) means to forcibly compact, to pound down.

קרה

Verb קרה (qa-ra), and its by-form קרא (q'a-ra'), mean to near, to meet or to happen upon. Noun קורה (q-o-ra) describes a rafter or beam; the things that come together to form a roof, and which obviously relate to bricks pieced into a wall. Verb קרה (q-a-ra) means to piece beams together and noun מקרה (me-qa-re-h) means literally place of beams; beam-work.

Noun דבר (d-ab-ar) means word. It also means "thing" since the naming of a thing causes the experienced reality of the thing. All thus created "things" together form the whole of experienceable reality, which in turn is called the Word of God.

Noun דבר (de-ber) describes any deadly pestilence, which is a "word" that breaks unstable compounds apart. In nature this occurs via the Weak Nuclear Force. The ability of unstable compounds to break apart sits at the heart of all progress and thus all reality.

The rare noun דבר (do-ber), refers to a pasture; probably a well-defined fenced-in field upon which sheep graze. Figuratively this word obviously refers to some specific Holy Book from which a community feeds (the books of the Bible originated as separate works, with their separate adherers). Noun דברה (d-i-b-ra) means matter or issue, and the similar noun דבורה (de-bo-ra-h) describes the bee (this probably because bees make honey, and "milk and honey" denote essential sustenance). The noun דביר (de-b-ir) was a nickname for the Holy of Holies and means "place of the word".

The noun מדבר (m-id-b-ar) literally means "place of wording" and is used once to mean mouth and 270 times to mean wilderness, and because a wilderness is a place without cultivation, any cultivation needs to spring up in a wilderness. And anybody serious about the quest for true insight needs to leave the culture (or religion) of his heritage behind and spend a stint in the uncharted wild. All major players in the Bible did so.

De-b-ir meaning

One of the towns called De-b-ir was also known as Ki-ri-a-t'-h-sep-her (Judge-s 1:11). Ki-ri-a-t'h means town, and sep-her (ספר), means book. Some translators render this name 'o-ra-c-l'e' and perhaps for the king's name this may be. But the town whose name was first Town Of The Book, and whose new name is identical to the name of the Holy of Holies may certainly have become known as Place Of The Word.
