President Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal if Germany, France and the United Kingdom do not meet his demands, according to a new report from Axios.
The president told Netanyahu during their White House meeting last week that the three nations have only proposed "cosmetic changes" that don't go far enough, the news outlet reported on Sunday.
Trump is demanding "significant changes" to the Iran deal, not just additional agreements between the U.S. and the European nations, and said he would pull out of the deal if those changes aren't made, Israeli officials told Axios.
The White House and Netanyahu's office refused to comment to Axios on the report.
Israel does not partake in the talks directly but is updated on any progress regarding the negotiations.
Trump set May 12 as the deadline for reaching an agreement on how to change the Iran deal with the three European countries. If no consensus is reached by that date, Trump is expected to withdraw the U.S. from the deal.
In the past two months, the four nations have held two talks. Another round of talks is expected to begin on Thursday in Berlin.
On the same day Trump and Netanyahu met, Vice President Pence said at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference that if the deal is not fixed in the coming months, the U.S. plans to withdraw "immediately."
The Iran nuclear deal was agreed to during the Obama administration. It lifts sanctions placed on Iran in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapon ambitions.
Trump has frequently railed against the agreement, which he called the "worst deal ever negotiated." However, he has repeatedly waived sanctions against Tehran that were lifted as part of the Obama-era deal, though he has also warned he will not continue to do so going forward.
