*"Ya-v-anna"(*ANNA=HEBREW SCRIPTURAL PROPHETESS OF:ANCIENT ISRAEL.)
She was the wife of Aulë, older sister of Vána [2], and kin to Mel-ia-n.[3]
Biography
In the Music of the Ainur, Yavanna sang of branches of great trees that would receive the rain of Ma-n-wë and Ulmo, and some trees sang to Ilúvatar. This is said to be the conception of the Shepherds of the Trees. Her thought also met with Manwë's, setting the arrival of the Great Eagles.[4]
Beginning in the Years of the Lamps during the Spring of Arda, she planted and caused to grow the first growing things of the world Olvar (trees and plants), which she had long prepared. At first, just as every other thing in the world that the Valar nurtured and cared for, these things prospered and thrived for a time. Melkor, however, had his own plans and they involved taking the world from his brethren and ruling it for himself. From his great fortress of Utumno in the far north, he sent forth his poisons into the veins of the world blighting the Spring of Arda. Then the things of Yavanna fell sick and rotted and soon after Melkor assaulted and destroyed the Two Lamps, breaking the world.
After the destruction of the Two Lamps the Valar withdrew to Aman and created Valinor. Upon the green mound of E-el-l-o-h-ar, Yavanna sat and sang while the other V-a-la-r sat and listened. Her song, with the aid of the tears of N-ie-nn-a brought forth the Two Trees of V-al-i-no-r, her greatest creation, which gave light to the land. Middle-earth was left in darkness and Yavanna put a sleep upon all the plant and animal life. However, Yavanna did not forsake the Outer Lands; at times she would come there and heal the hurts of Morgoth and urged the other Valar to wage war on him before the Awakening of the Elves.
After Eru allowed Aulë's creations, the Dwarves, to survive, Yavanna feared that they would cut down all the trees in Middle-earth. Aulë, in reply, told her that even Elves and Men, the true Children of Ilúvatar would have need of her trees as well. Yavanna lamented to Manwë, questioning whether anything she had made would be free from the dominion of others. Manwë brought her concerns before Ilúvatar in prayer, and Eru did indeed have pity upon Yavanna: He answered her plea by creating the Ents to protect the trees.[2][4]
When the Elves built Tirion, Yavanna fashioned the tree Galathilion, a lesser image of Telperion, for the court beneath the Mindon Eldaliéva.[5]
After the destruction of the Two Trees Yavanna examined their remains and told the other Valar that if she could use the light of the Silmarils she could heal them. This light she was denied by the will of Fëanor.[6] Doing what she and Nienna could, they managed to bring forth one silver flower from Telperion and one golden fruit from La-u-re-l-in. She gave these to her husband Aulë, who fashioned vessels for them and thus created the Moon and theSun to give light to all of Arda.[7]
For the Men who had stood with the Valar in the War of Wrath the land of Andor was raised by Ossë, established by Aulë, and enriched by Yavanna. When the Edain came to this island they created the realm of Númenor.[8] In the later centuries, when the Valar decided to send emissaries to the mortal lands, Yavanna begged the Maia Curumo to take her servant, Aiwendil, with him.[9]
Etymology
In Quenya, Yavanna means "Giver of Fruits", from yáve ("fruit")[10] and anna ("gift").[11] Kementári, her epithet, means "Queen of the Earth", from kemen ("the Earth")[12] and tari ("Queen").[13]
Her name in Sindarin is I-v-on, meaning "Giver of Fruits". It is only attested in the compound I-v-o-n-win("Maidens of Yavanna").[14] The month I-v-a-nn-e-t-h may have been named after Yavanna.[15]
Earlier names
Palúrien was an earlier name for Yavanna. It means "Lady of the Wide Earth."[16]
Trivia
- Yavanna could possibly be related to Aragorn II Elessar, as she is said to be kin of Melian, who was Aragorn's distant ancestor. Yavanna's possible relation to Melian could result in her relation to many other characters, such as Elros, Elrond, and Arwen.
- She is ranked fourth among the Aratar (eight most powerful of the Valar) and second among the Valier (ladies of the Valar).
- Instead of Yavanna, in a few other versions, it was her sister Vána that made Laurelin bear its last fruit.
- Yavanna shares similarities with the classical goddesses: Demeter, associated with crop growth and fertility, and Gaia, also known as "Mother Earth".

The origin and making of lembas is only known by the short text O-f L-em-ba-s written by Pe-n-g-o-l-o-d-h. L-em-ba-s was made first by Y-a-v-anna from special corn that grew in A-ma-n, and O-ro-më gave it to the Elves of the Great Journey. For this reason, it was an Elven custom that only women should make l-em-ba-s; they were called Y-a-v-a-nn-i-l-d-i who knew the secret of its recipe. Also, the custom requested that only an Elven Queen should keep and distribute the lembas, for this reason she was called also ma-ss-á-n-ië or b-e-sa-in.[1]
Only on rare occasions was it given to non-Elves, because it was believed that mortals who ate it would become wary of their mortality and would desire to live among the Elves.[1]
The corn itself was an enduring plant that needed but a little sunlight to ripen and could be sown at any season and then sprouted and grew swiftly. Yet it was prone to north winds, while Mo-r-goth dwelt there. The Eldar grew it in guarded lands and sunlit glades. The ears were harvested without scythe or sickle but each one was gathered by hands and the white stalks were drawn from the earth and used to weave baskets in which the grain was stored.[1]
Mel-ia-n, as the queen of Do-ri-a-t-h, was one who held this recipe from Y-a-v-a-nn-a. By giving l-em-ba-s to B-e-leg for Tú-ri-n,[2] she showed great favour because never before l-em-ba-s was given to a Man and seldom it was again. Later it was passed to G-a-la-d-ri-e-l and other E-l-v-es.
When ships had been sent forth, at the behest of Tu-r-g-on, towards the West, its mariners carried a sealed wallet with Waybread for their voyage. V-o-ro-n-wë, after surviving the wreck, shared it with Tu-o-r throughout their journey to G-o-n-do-l-in.[3]
The G-a-la-d-h-ri-m had a large store of l-em-ba-s in L-ot-h-l-ó-ri-e-n. G-a-la-d-ri-e-l gave some of it to the Fellowship of the Ring upon their departure.[4] Frodo Baggins and S-am-wi-se G-am-g-ee subsisted on it through the majority of their journey from there into Mo-r-do-r.
The tradition of farming the Western Corn and the making of Waybread was lost for ever in Middle-earth after the departure of G-a-la-d-ri-e-l and the death of Ar-w-e-n.[5]
Description
The cakes were very nutritious, stayed fresh for months when wrapped in leaves, and were used for sustenance on long journeys. L-em-ba-s had a b-ro-w-n-is-h co-l-our on the outside and a cream co-l-our on the inside.
According to Gi-m-l-i, it was similar to C-r-am, although one of the Elves of L-o-t-h-l-ó-ri-e-n commented that it was more pleasant, and more strengthening than any food by Men.[4]
Like other products of the Elves, it was offensive to evil creatures; Go-l-lu-m refused outright to eat of it.[6] When F-ro-do was captured by Orcs in Mordor, the Orcs hated the look of the l-em-ba-s even more than Gollum.[7]
Etymology
L-em-ba-s is S-i-n-d-ar-i-n and derived from Old S-i-n-d-ar-i-n l-e-nn-m-ba-s-s which means "journey-bread". As a rough translation of this term it was also often called "Waybread".[1] This word came in turn from Primitive Elvish l-e(n)d-em-ba-s-s-ē, literally meaning "bread taken on leaving home (for a long journey)", which in Qu-e-n-ya was l-e-r-em-ba-s.[8] However, the proper Qu-e-n-ya term for l-em-ba-s was c-oi-ma-s which means "life-bread".[1]
Inspiration
The l-em-ba-s has been compared with the Eucharist, even as being the most explicit symbol of Christianity in The Lord of the Rings.[9] T-o-l-ki-e-n himself mentions that the l-em-ba-s are one of the few details from which can be deduced he is a Catholic writer.[10] He acknowledged the religious significance of the l-em-ba-s in his answer to Fo-rr-est J. A-ck-e-r-ma-n, who had called l-em-ba-s as a 'food concentrate' in a possible adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.[11] Like "l-em-ba-s," "v-ia-t-i-cum," a term for the E-u-ch-ar-i-s-t, means "provision for a journey."
The name "Waybread" resembles in a way the Old English name for the herb p-la-n-t-a-in, which was wegbrade.[12]
