Update 11:11 UTC: The area has a thin crust with a lot of volcanoes and volcanic activity.  The map below shows (via red patches) the magma intrusion into the very thin Afar depression. Eastern parts like Eritrea, parts of Ethiopia, Somalia etc will be gradually (thousands or millions of years) split away from mainland Africa and will first become islands and later possibly to be swallowed by the oceans. The Afar depression will be probably the first part of the region to become a sea, as a big part of it is now already below sea level)  with a lot of volcanic activity underneath (just like the southern part of the Red Sea at this moment). The extension is mainly generated by the Arabian plate moving 15 mm/year to the North East while the Somalian plate moves to the South East.

Update 10:47 UTC: This part of the desert is very sparsely populated

Update 10:45 UTC: The red line on the map shows a transform fault line, which gives the stress in this area of a beautiful desert!

Update 10:42 UTC: Based on the present earthquake parameters (Magnitude, Depth, Population, etc) and our experience with earthquake damage impact, earthquake-report.com does expect at least some slight damage like cracks in walls, fallen tiles, etc.

The sofa I was sleeping in abruptly started to \'vibrate\' for not more than a couple of seconds. - ER: Thank you for telling us Mekelle - It was a very short time to notice (probably about 2 seconds) on 24th March 2018 at 1:27pm local time. I was having lunch with my family and nothing was damaged at that moment. Mekelle - Very weak shaking Mekelle - I was taking a nap when the quake happened. I felt as if someone (a kid) was shaking the bed I was sleeping in. It lasted for about 2 seconds. Fortunately, no property was damaged. Mekelle - It was March 24, 2018 at 1:28PM. I was sat in my sofa transcribing into my laptop. I felt the shake and tried to observe the situation. It was something vibrating the sofa. My laptop shakes upon my legs. When I see to outside, I saw the TV and its stand also vibrated. My wife came from the other class and told me what happened. I told her it is earthquake and told me also she felt it. Mekelle - It was very short but really shaking, Mekelle - less than 5seconds Mekelle - The window started to shake at 7:30 I went out of my house to see if it is an Electrical shock,It lasts for a couple of seconds.It was clear that it is an Earthquake. Mekelle Mekelle - There was shacking starting at mid night. mekele - it lasted for 2 seconds with 4.9 magnitude
