Up to 7 inches of snow is expected in some places in Massachusetts
Just when it was feeling like winter might be waning, a fast-moving storm expected to hit parts of Massachusetts Saturday night leaving up to 7 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
The snow is expected to start falling around Springfield about 8 p.m. while Greater Boston will start to see flakes about 9 p.m., with the heaviest snowfall — up to an inch per hour — expected to begin after 10 p.m., according to Bill Simpson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
“In terms of timing, we’re pretty lucky. There usually aren’t that many people on the road that late so motorists won’t be too greatly impacted,” said Simpson.
By the time the storm has passed, between 4 and 6 inches are expected to have fallen on Greater Boston, according to Simpson.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory for all of Massachusetts north of the Mass. Pike that goes into effect at 7 p.m. Saturday and lasts until 7 a.m. Sunday .
Parts of the state south of the Mass. Pike, as well as Connecticut and Rhode Island, will be under a winter storm warning for the same duration of time.
The storm will quickly blow itself out to sea and the snow is expected to continued until about 6 a.m. Sunday, according to Simpson.
Before the snow hits, Saturday is expected to be partially cloudy with a high of 37 degrees.
Once the snow stops falling in the morning, Sunday is expected to be sunny, but blustery, with gusts of winds up to 26 miles per hour and a high of 45 degrees, according to forecasters.
Once the week starts, the snow won’t last long as Presidents’ Day is expected to be sunny with a high of 49 degrees and a slight chance of showers after 4 p.m.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to usher in a mid-week “”heat wave with highs of 66 and 67 degrees respectively before temperatures retreat to a still-warm 51 degrees on Thursday.
